A big wave breaks across the whole frame at Ho’okipa Beach in this shot. Ho’okipa Beach Park, located on Maui’s north shore, is a world-renowned destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, often referred to as the “Windsurfing Capital of the World.” While you won’t find 30ft surf at this location, little white crosses on the beach area remind how dangerous this can be. Using a longer focal length and a fast shutter speed, will help you isolate the details and power of these impressive waves.
Ho’okipa Beach is an early stop in my Road to Hana photo locations guide. See another angle in Ho’okipa Waves Crashing on Lava Rock, or compare the shore break at Big Beach.
