Turquoise wave curling at Ho'okipa Beach Park, Maui

Ho’okipa Waves Crashing on Lava Rock, Maui

Ho’okipa waves curl into a turquoise barrel in this shot, frozen with a fast shutter. Ho’okipa Beach Park, located on Maui’s north shore, is a world-renowned destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, often referred to as the “Windsurfing Capital of the World.” While you won’t find 30ft surf at this location, little white crosses on the beach area remind how dangerous this can be. Using a longer focal length and a fast shutter speed, will help you isolate the details and power of these impressive waves.

Ho’okipa waves are best viewed from the lookout above the beach, one of the stops in my 9 Best Road to Hana Photo Locations. See also Ho’okipa Beach Big Wave.
