Niagara Falls, especially at sunrise is a site to behold. There are few places in Canada or the world that are more iconic. But capturing a fresh, unique angle of one of the most photographed natural wonders in the world requires a bit of planning, patience, and in this case, a tolerance for bitter cold.
For this shoot, I set my sights on photographing the Canadian Horseshoe Falls at sunrise, aiming to frame the sun just as it crested behind the curve of the falls, casting light through the morning mist. The clouds in the background had a different plan, but at the least, some of them lit up as the sun peaked above the horizon.
I use The Photographer’s Ephemeris in planning most of my shots. It indicates when you have sunrise and sunset but more importantly where the sun will come up. The optimal position for sunrise at the Horsehoe is around mid-Dec to January.
