Magnificent Arco de Albandeira Sunset – Algarve, Portugal

The Arco de Albandeira is one of the most impressive natural arches on the entire Algarve coast — and in my opinion one of the most underrated photography locations in southern Portugal. While Ponta da Piedade and Praia da Marinha attract the larger crowds, photographers who have visited all three consistently rank Albandeira among the finest for sheer drama and scale.

The arch is a massive limestone sea formation that separates Praia de Albandeira from the neighbouring hidden cove of Praia da Estaquinha. The area is sometimes referred to locally as a “pirates’ cove” or “smugglers’ cove” — a name that feels entirely fitting given the remote, sheltered character of the location. The arch itself is large enough to frame an entire seascape within it, and the surrounding rock formations, grottos, and cliff faces offer compositional possibilities in almost every direction.

This location works as both a sunrise and sunset location — one of the few in the Algarve that genuinely rewards visits at either end of the day. I photographed here on two separate evenings at sunset.

Getting there — the location is accessible from a small parking area near Praia de Albandeira. From there a short clifftop trail leads to the arch viewpoints. Give yourself plenty of time to explore — this is not a location to rush. The various clifftop angles above the arch each produce a distinctly different composition, and the light changes quickly at sunset.

A 16-35mm wide angle lens, sturdy tripod, and ND filter are essential for the long exposure water work.
