Sunset Rock view at sunset of Monastery of St. Rousanou and St. Nicholas Anapausas, Meteora, Greece

Monasteries of St. Rousanou and St. Nicholas Anapausas

I was amazed the moment I saw an image of these remarkable monasteries, perched atop towering rock formations. They are located in Meteora, Greece and are a group of Eastern Orthodox monasteries which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are six active monasteries that visitors can explore. While there are many amazing viewpoints to see these marvelous structures, my favorite is a point called Sunset Rock. I almost did not make this image. It was literally poring rain 2 hours earlier, but after doing photography for a couple decades I have learned that sometimes, if you are lucky, inclement weather can give you the best dramatic conditions. When I saw a break in the weather it was almost too late; I dashed from the hotel to catch the last rays of sunlight. The rainy weather produced these low level clouds that created an absolutely sublime image. Knowing your gear is paramount when you have window of minutes to capture a scene. The Monastery of St. Rousanou and The Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas are framed below. Probably my favorite image to date.
